Teaching Grandpa How to Understand Emoji Meanings Like a Badass!
Welcome to Lesson #2 of our short 4-part blog post series that introduces Baby Boomers (and some Gen Xers) to the ins and outs of cell phone communications. Today’s lesson focuses on emoji meanings.
Hopefully, you have been practicing the texting do’s and don’ts and abbreviations you learned in Lesson #1 – Texting 101. If not, you may want to check that out before you read this post.
Sharing is Caring!
If you are a young person who is a bit frustrated communicating with an elder in your life make sure to share these posts with them.
What Time Is It? It’s Emoji Time!
Now it is time to take your cell phone communications game to the next level. As you learned on Monday, there is no room for complacency here at Prime Your Pump!
Today we are going to introduce you to Emojis, also known as Emoticons. They are little icons or images that are inserted into a text message to convey an emotion, thought, idea etc.
In Lesson #1: Texting 101, we learned that people use texting abbreviations because it is easier than typing out the full thing they want to say.
Well, emojis are taking things up a notch, but more as a way to conclude a text by using them as punctuation. Emojis can also be used to replace words in sentences, but a word of warning, some emojis have multiple meanings – so be careful!
Let’s Do Things a Little Differently This Week…
Now that you know what emojis are, let’s dig in and teach you some examples. Just like we did in Lesson 1, we are going to leverage the 80-20 rule and introduce you to the 10 emojis that you will see the most often, according to a list revealed by Apple.
But instead of just listing them out, we are going to do things a bit differently this week. We are going to play a little interactive game where we show you an emoji and give you 4 potential meanings for each. Your task is to try and pick the correct meaning.
Hopefully, it will help you learn while at the same time having fun! Ok, let’s play…
So how did you do? I am sure you now have a good handle on the 10 most commonly used emoji meanings. Make sure you tell us your score in the comments section below!
“What happens if someone sends me an emoji that we didn’t cover in the quiz above?” you ask.

That’s it for today’s lesson, not so bad, right?
Make sure you get some rest before next week because I will need your full attention when we move on to Lesson #3 – Selfies.

Interesting! But I LOL at the chocolate mound. Although I got a perfect score I would only feel comfortable using the positive ones. I am sure I would otherwise likely use them inappropriately but good to know. Thanks for sharing!
Yeah probably best to stick with the smiley faces. Improper use of the eggplant, hot dog, taco or cat may land you in a situation you aren’t prepared to deal with!
Hi Rick: 9 out of 11. Not too shabby for a guy who does not own a cell phone. I do like the pile of poop. Now if I were an enterprising entrepreneur, I would convert that design to a rubber hand stamp and peddle it to teachers and instructors for use in grading student’s term papers. I am fairly sure where you are going with the eggplant. My wife keeps telling me I have a dirty mind, to which I reply “that’s one of the reasons we got married”.
Excelsior!!
Hi Dave, 9/11 – nice work! Not a bad entrepreneurial idea! Your thought process is spot on with respect to the eggplant! LOL! I prefer to think of it as a creative mind rather than a dirty mind! Take Care, Rick
