This is a Great Technique to Change Your Mindset
This week’s video is about how to change your mindset using the 10 10 10 rule we discussed in an earlier blog post. For me, it has been especially helpful with respect to losing weight.
Recall the 10 10 10 rule…
Is a technique that has you take whatever decision you need to make, and then to ask yourself 3 questions:
(1) How will I feel about it 10 minutes from now?
(2) How will I feel about it 10 months from now?
(3) How will I feel about it 10 years from now?
I want to illustrate the 10 10 10 rule with a personal example.
For 30 years I have had lower back problems and have tried shots in the back, acupuncture, medication, to name a few remedies.
None worked.
Then a few months ago my knee went downhill and I started to limp when I walked. I also had gained about 20 pounds over the last 25 years.
Well, I was thoroughly disgusted with myself.
So I decided to try something new: the 10 10 10 rule.
Logic told me that if I lost 25 pounds my back a knee would feel better. My orthopedist vigorously confirmed this weight loss assumption.
So, I decided to use the 10 10 10 rule to change my mindset to lose weight.
So now whenever I am about to stuff something into my mouth…
I use the 10 10 10 rule. I ask myself the following 3 questions.
(1) How will I feel if I eat this in 10 minutes?
Well, since I will still be eating it, I will feel great.
(2) How will I feel if I eat this in 10 months?
Really crappy because my back and knee will hurt; a lot!!!
(3) How will I feel if I eat this in 10 years?
Well, I am 71, so in 10 years I will be 81 and I will probably be in a wheelchair. I must tell you that this thought is VERY motivating not to stick whatever I am thinking in my mouth.
Since I started using the 10 10 10 rule…
I have lost 15 pounds in about 6 weeks. I just ask myself the 3 questions to change my mindset and eat more slowly.
My back is almost all better and my knee is about 75% better.

If you have a problem and you want to change your mindset, try the 10 10 10 rule.
When to Use It:
Whenever you want to change your mindset (behavior) with a low pain cost.
Personally, I find it very easy to use the 10 10 10 rule in respect to eating.
It makes it very easy for me to consider the long term consequences of short term actions.
And, my wife doesn’t have to nag me about losing weight. It is totally in MY CONTROL.

I think the idea of using 10-10-10 regarding eating habits as pure genius. I have got to lose weight also, as I am approaching the Jackie Gleason profile where I cannot see my feet. What really slapped me upside the head was needing new pants one waist size larger. My wife does not nag either, but she got on my case about my pants being way too tight around my gut. Now I must drop back down from a 38 to a more reasonable 36 waist.
So…..no more ice cream or pastry for dessert, no more dark chocolate as a snack. Stick to the meat and veggies. However, I will not give up pretzels, the junk food of the gods.
So when I do lose the excess weight, what will become of the size 38 pants? Simple answer – suspenders. I really appreciate the KITA, and I’ll let you know about the results in two months or so.
