13 Motivating (and Entertaining) Fitness Tips That Will Make You Better
The abs post I did last month was so well received that a bunch of people asked if I could do another fitness tips related post. Being the PYP genie that I am…your wish is my command! Plus, I love talking about fitness and healthy living anyway, so here we go!
Today, I am going to give you 13 kick ass health and fitness tips based on practices from the world of business.
What are we waiting for? Let’s go!!!
Tip #1 – Fire up the machine!
In business – The first thing you do when you get to the office is to turn on the machines, whatever they may be, depending on your business.
Related health/fitness tip: The first thing you need to do when you wake up is to fire up your machine! A great way to do this by having a glass of water with lemon. Our bodies are 60% water and after 7-8 hours of sleep, we need to rehydrate. Plus, water helps speed up our metabolism and is good for the skin. Add some lemon if you want as it has been shown to help digestion and reduce bloating.
Tip #2 – Schedule Your Exercise Time Like a Boss!
In Business – If you want to meet with the boss, you typically need to schedule a time to meet with her or him.
Related health/fitness tip: Make sure to schedule exercise time with the boss every day to make sure you get your workout in. However, in this case, YOU are the BOSS! So, get out your calendar and schedule some workout time with the boss. But don’t be late – you don’t want to make the boss wait!
Tip #3 – Get Stuff Ready Beforehand to Save Time
In Business – If you go to Starbucks you will see they have everything laid out and placed strategically to minimize the setup time when they make your $7 “skinny double moca choco-latte”.
Related health/fitness tip: Meal prep to save time and ensure you are eating healthy. Cook a bunch of food at once and put it in Tupperware containers. That way you can grab it and eat. Many times, if you don’t have food ready you will grab whatever is convenient which in most cases is bad for you.
BONUS Related Health/fitness tip – Get your workout clothes out the night before. That way you just need to get up, get dressed and get out the door. No excuses!
Tip #4 – Eliminate Bottlenecks
In Business – A bottleneck or constraint is anything that restricts the throughput of a system. An example of a bottleneck is that annoying lady in front of you at the supermarket who pulls out 20 coupons when you are already running late!
Related health/fitness tip: There is always that douchebag who is hitting on you, or that ‘chatty Cathy’ that wants to have a conversation which interrupts your workout. They are a bottleneck to your getting in and out of the gym. My advice – put headphones on, don’t make eye contact and just keep doing your thing.
Tip #5 – Measure to Make Gains!
In Business – Measurement plays an important role in focusing people on specific aspects of a business. Many businesses have metrics they use to measure success. For example, a pizza place may keep track of how long it takes from when you order to when your pizza arrives. By keeping track, it helps them give you better service…or so you hope!
Related health/fitness tip: Log your workouts, your weight, your bodyfat percentage using an app or a journal. It will keep you accountable and will let you keep an eye on your progress and let you adjust along the way.
Tip #6 – Invest, Invest, Invest!
In Business: Many businesses are constantly reacting to the crisis du jour. To break out of this mode, they need to invest time in developing, testing and implementing changes that will lead to improvements.
Related health/fitness tip: This is analogous to you investing in yourself and your health. You need to take care of the machine that is you by investing in it! Some things you can invest in:
Massages (happy ending optional!)
Getting enough rest.
Personal training sessions.
Proper shoes and workout gear.
Spin classes or Pilates – they are more expensive, but spending money on you is never a bad investment!
Quality food and supplements; perhaps you could see a nutritionist.
Tip #7 – Stop Doing the Same Thing Over and Over!
In Business: In some situations, information is recorded in a log or entered into a database more than one time, creating no added value – it’s called multiple entry. For example, a doctor’s office making you fill out forms then having someone enter that into a computer. It’s double entry – instead, they should give you an iPad and eliminate double entry.
Related health/fitness tip: This is analogous to doing the same stuff at the gym over and over. Your body will quickly adjust to it and you won’t improve. Instead, constantly switch up the number of sets and repetitions, the amount of weight, the rest between sets, the exercises you do etc. You need to keep your body guessing!
Tip #8 – There Are No Shortcuts to Success
In Business: Get rich quick schemes are rampant. When you hear someone say, ‘if you want to make easy money from home, message me’. Don’t! They are full of crap. It’s probably some type of pyramid scheme or other ‘get rich quick’ scam. If it sounds too good to be true…it probably is.
Related health/fitness tip: This is analogous to any of those gimmicks you see on TV that promise to get you in shape fast with little effort. Or the latest fad diet. It’s crap. Put in the hard work, be disciplined and commit long-term to a healthy lifestyle and I GUARANTEE you will be happy with the results.
Tip #9 – Never. Stop. Learning!
Business example: Businesses are constantly changing and evolving to improve. However, those changes will not be effective if employees have not received the basic training required to carry them out.
Related health/fitness tip: Keep learning about fitness, nutrition, and exercise. Learning never stops, meaning you should always be trying to get that extra edge. There are various ways you can keep learning:
Get a trainer.
Watch health and fitness related podcasts.
Read articles.
Watch videos on health and nutrition.
Take healthy cooking classes.
The point is to never stop learning…EVER!
Tip #10– Safety!
Business example: Employee and customer safety should always be #1 in any organization.
Related health/fitness tip: Your health and well-being are the same. Stretch, use proper form, don’t go too heavy, get adequate rest, get treatment if you are hurt. Stay away from sugar and unhealthy fats! Always practice safe sex – the gift that keeps on giving is not one you want to receive.
Tip #11 – Franchise Your Health – The Power of Consistency
Business example: Think about franchises. Franchisees are required to comply with and abide by certain standards set by the franchisor with respect to products and services. Why? This helps set and maintain customer’s expectations via consistency.
Related health/fitness tip: If you take nothing away from this blog post, I implore you to take this away. If you want to get into great shape you need to be consistent and disciplined and stick to whatever routine you have. Period, end of story! Improve a little each day and watch how it compounds like money in the bank!
Tip #12 – Be a Copycat!
Business example: Uber disrupted the taxi business by pairing people with cars with people needing rides. Airbnb copied that model and disrupted the hotel industry by pairing people with rooms to rent with people seeking accommodations.
Related health/fitness tip: Find someone that has achieved what you want to achieve and do what they do to achieve similar results. Success leaves clues.
Tip #13 – No Excuses!
This last of our 13 fitness tips has nothing to do with business and is not a specific health and fitness tip, it is a ‘Rick’ tip.
It goes like this…
STOP MAKING EXCUSES…because no one wants to hear them and really…no one cares!
Now…
It’s time for you to stop reading this blog post on 13 fitness tips because…
You have a gym date with Destiny – and it’s time to go pick her up!
Until next time, be healthy and fit, don’t make excuses and as always…PYMFP!
