time wasters

Welcome to the third of our four-part series on divesting things from your life.  After reading last week’s post, ‘The Apocalyptic Decluttering Orgasm and How to Have One Now!’, we hope you now have less material things in your life and more spine-tingling non-sexual orgasms!

Now it’s time to look at divesting some of the time wasters in your life.

If there is one thing that everyone wants more of, besides sex, it’s time.

It just seems like there is never enough time to do everything we want to do.

However, if you step back and take some time to think (cheap plug for Bri’s great article last week!) you will find that there is more than enough time in your life to do everything you need to do.

It’s Time to Visit the Dark Side!

This is where today’s blog post takes a sharp right to the dark side.

I am going to introduce you to 11 superheroes gone bad that you need to be wary of.  These characters used to be good but now are filled with bad intentions!

That’s right, their main obsession is to try and steal your time!

My hope is that by introducing you to them, you will be able to spot them coming, be prepared and completely eradicate them from your life

Why 11?

You are probably wondering why there are 11.  Well, I read that having an odd number in your title makes people notice it more on search engines, thus increasing your click-through rate.  A little self-serving? There’s no doubt about it, but at least I am being honest.

Buckle Up, Let’s Go!

And here they are:

So, that’s the list, you are probably saying ‘that’s a great list and some of those superheroes gone bad have got to me in the past, but how can I get a handle on those time wasters in the future?’

Aha, we have an answer for that.

It’s called the ‘Prime Your Pump Time-Audit’

This is how it works:

Step 1– Write down all the stuff you do in a day and how long each item takes.

Step 2 – Do this for as many days as necessary until you see patterns repeating. Most of your days should be similar, and if they are, a couple days should suffice.  However, if there is a lot of variation in how you spend your days, you may want to do it for a longer time period, like a week.

Step 3 – Analyze how you are spending your time. This should be a real eye-opener and shock to some of you.  Until you see it on paper (or a computer) it is easy to brush off how much time you are wasting on certain activities.

Step 4 – Strategize on how you can eliminate or reduce the things that are wasting time.

One tool you can use is the 80-20 rule which we have discussed before.  Figure out which 20% of the things that you are spending time on are responsible for 80% of your success.  Then see if you can reduce or eliminate the time you spend on the other 80% of the things you do.

Use It or Lose It:

To divest time wasters in your life:

Use the time audit and 80-20 rule as discussed above.

Also, be mindful of common time wasters discussed in the slideshow above and see if you can divest them from your life:

Divest people who waste your time.

Divest material items which not only cost you money but also cost you time.

Stop the mindless TV surfing and internet surfing by scheduling TV or internet time.

Quit saying ‘yes’ to everything and overcommitting yourself, instead, say ‘no’ to things not adding value.

According to studies, it takes almost 25 minutes to get back on track.  Instead of multi-tasking, focus on one thing at a time.

Limit time spent on email by scheduling time to do it and prioritizing the emails you touch.

Chores – see if you can outsource them, if not batch them!

If you are spending a lot of time commuting, move closer to work if it’s feasible.  Otherwise, consider ride-sharing, public transportation or uber so you can get work done on your commute.

Being a perfectionist can be a big time waster, know when ‘good’ is good enough.

Gossiping adds no value to anyone’s life!

Beware of the time trap known as social media.  Schedule social media time and turn off notifications.

When To Divest Time Wasters in Your Life

When you find yourself getting stressed out because there just ‘isn’t enough time in the day’.
