This week’s video is about how to give an amazing memorable tribute speech.

There are two types of tribute speeches:

(1)  Factual (true and usually boring)
(2)  Fictitious  (entertaining and memorable)

In this video, we will focus on the second type, mainly, because everyone already knows how to do the first type.

The fictitious type of tribute speech has two specific purposes:

(1)  to entertain, and
(2)  to be memorable

Remember, the second type of speech is critical if there is at least one of the first type in the ceremony; for example, roasts, retirement speeches, and the like.

(3)  You have to be creative and make up a believable, but an outrageous story.

(4)  You have to deliver the story with a straight face.

(5)  You have to include someone in the audience in the story who is known to be the pinnacle of truthfulness.

  1. Who would have ever thought that you, an acknowledged guru of couth and decorum, at one time had a fictional mud wrestling career. I’m impressed! Kudos to your manager Shelly for revealing to the world this previously unknown experience.

OK, getting back to reality. This is another of my true stories. First, some background material. When in the Air Force, every month four of us would drive down to Los Angeles for meetings at the Program Office. We usually took the “site van”, a military vehicle, but every so often our boss Matt would drive his own personal van.

So one time on the way back from LA in Matt’s van, he decides to exit highway 101 and detour through Santa Barbara for a change in route. So here we are, driving slowly along the beach road, admiring the local flora and fauna, when we spot Flora jogging and bouncing along in her really tight jogging suit. Of course everyone immediately looks to the right to admire this scenery, including Matt who’s driving. Matt is now focused only on one thing, and it’s not the road. Mike, who is riding shotgun, notices that the van is aiming directly for an azalea bush in somebody’s yard. He grabs the wheel and straightens out the van, avoiding the potential catastrophe of impacting the azalea bush, and perhaps a fence or garden gnome. We all had a good laugh. No harm, no foul.

Matt retired later that year, and since I was to be his replacement as site commander, I gave his “fictitious” tribute speech, only it was not fictitious but factual. Basically I related to the audience the above scenario, and then presented Matt with a real azalea bush for the front yard of his house, with the instructions to plant it near the driveway so your van knows what not to aim for. Mike, in the audience, verified that the story was true, which it actually was.
