How Wearing Black Like Me Can Help Reduce Decision Fatigue

Today’s piece of advice is about how to make your life simpler, or how to reduce complexity or why I always wear black.

I always wear the same thing and I have been doing it for 25 years – black t-shirt, black jeans, black belt, black socks, black shoes.

I have reduced complexity in my life and reduced decision fatigue.

You need to figure out where in your life you have added complexity and it’s usually due to you adding constraints to your life – “I must do this” or “I must do that”.

Additionally, reducing complexity also reduces decision fatigue. Studies have shown that the more decisions you make during a day affects the quality of your decisions. So as the day goes on, the quality of your decisions deteriorates. By reducing complexity, you are reducing the number of non-important decisions you make throughout the day, therefore saving your brain power for the important ones and thus increasing their quality.

Use It or Lose It – Reducing Decision Fatigue

To make your life simpler and reduce complexity as well as decision fatigue:

Figure out where in your life you have added complexity and eliminate it. For example, wear the same outfit to work, eating the same foods, working out at a specific time every day, scheduling meetings in advance, etc. etc.

When to Use It…

When you feel overwhelmed due to decision fatigue and the large number of decisions you have to make on a daily basis

When you feel the quality of your decisions deteriorates throughout the day because you are tired

When you feel like your life is too complicated in some areas

Discuss…

How have you made your life simpler or reduced decision fatigue through reduction of complexity?

That’s the piece of advice for this week!

  1. Complexity is often what makes life fun and interesting. If everyone was like you and wore black all the time and drove the same car and ate the same things, the market economy would fall apart.

Anyway, how are you old friend?
