Awkward Silence: How to Use It to Your Advantage

May 2018

Today’s lesson is about using awkward silence also known as ‘the power of silence’ to your advantage.  Many times after you ask a question you don’t give the other person enough time to consider it.

By ‘consider it’, I mean one of two things:

You haven’t given them enough time to think about an answer.

You have asked a question that puts them on the spot. However, by your speaking before them, you are saving them from having to answer.

Instead:

For the first situation, give them time to formulate an answer, they may need to think for a minute, let them!

For the second situation, you don’t want to jump in too quickly. Give them the time and let the awkward silence do the work, make them sweat and let the power of silence do the work for you!

Use It or Lose It:

Remember to let the awkward silence do the work

You will also be uncomfortable with the awkward silence, so resist jumping in because YOU are uncomfortable with the silence.

  Give them time to answer!

When to Use Awkard Silence aka ‘The Power of Silence’:

In ordinary conversations when you are either trying to get information or putting someone on the spot.

What Do You Think?

How long did it take you to be uncomfortable with the silence?  Have you ever used the power of silence to your advantage?  Please let us know in the comments below.
